good intensions are often thwarted when you involve someone elses opinions.

         i might say for instance “you look amazing” this statement could indicate different things to different people. It could mean a) a simple, harmless compliment ; b) and insult suggesting that you didnt look amazing the last time i saw you; c) a means of hitting on you. Depending on the person it changes. We had a meeting for work today. Once a month we get together for a meeting and discuss upcoming promos, our financial operating statements, ideas for new things, etc. Today we also had an annual reading of the sexual harassment (and other means of harassment) clause. I never really thought how a joke or a gesture could be “threatening” to someone else. I mean there are the blatantly obvious things, but then there are the subtle things that are intended to be in good humor and harmless. The above example proves my point. If someone were to take the previous statement of “you look amazing” as a come-on, i could be sued for sexual harassment. And even if the person in which said statement is being spoken to, if someone else hears it and takes offense to it i could be sued for sexual harassment. 

    in another incident…. one of my friends wrote a blog of her views on feminism vs. traditional views of women. She is for staying at home and taking care of her husband and household. She, in a sort-of round-about way, ended up offending quite a few women. she did state in her blog that she didn’t think the choices that other women made were wrong but that it was just wrong for her. when others gave their opinions, she then had to defend her statements even though they were not meant to harm or offend. 

    so should we go around guarding every single word we say so as not to offend anyone or make anyone uncomfortable? Maybe it’s matter of circumstance and timing, but that’s just my opinion.
